For the next installment of our subscriber-exclusive newsletter series, New York Night School, our award-winning photo department is giving a five-week crash course on improving your photography skills — whether you’re an aspiring professional, a devoted hobbyist, or just trying to take better pictures for the family holiday card this year.

In How to Take a Photo, creative director Jody Quon and a rotating cast of our photo editors and contributing photographers will guide subscribers through the fundamentals of photography through a New York lens and give them actionable tips for capturing better images. Expect pointers on everything from taking portraits that show your subject’s personality to documenting vivid scenes on the street to getting delicious-looking food shots with your phone’s camera — and at the end, we hope you’ll share some of your work with us.

Each edition will be moderated by city editor Christopher Bonanos, who’s also the author of two books about photography: Instant: The Story of Polaroid and Flash: The Making of Weegee the Famous.

Sign up below or by clicking here to start the course. Newsletters will be sent once a week at 7 p.m. ET, for five weeks.
